Trolling Motor Controller
Trolling motor controller went bad.?
I have a 55lb thrust Motor guide Trolling motor that went bad. The controller unit or the top unit is bad. It just went out of Warranty which was 1 year. If I have to purchase a new one it would cost me $100.
The question I have is that I have an older model which is rated at 40lb thrust. Can I use the top unit from this 40lb thrust on my 55lb lower motor? Or is there some more complication power restriction on the 40lb thrust controller top unit?
The reason why i’m saying this is that both motor are 12V. I’m just wondering if I can do it, that’s all.
The controller unit on trolling motors are a high speed on and off switch. The power to the motor is either full on ,or off ,and this happens hundreds of times a second. The slower the speed setting, the more “off” the switch is . So , as long as the voltage is the same , the 40# controller should work with the 55# motor , but I’m not sure that you’ll get 55#s thrust . I’d go to an industrial motor repair shop , with the defective part, and see if they don’t have a similar unit for much less money. It will probably be more durable too
